Designers Bonnie Birnbaum and Keri Olson joined creative forces to make the pool house pop, and annexed the adjacent garage to create an adjoining Casablanca-inspired bar. While the two spaces have distinctly different atmospheres, Birnbaum and Olson used color and pattern to help them relate.
The pool house extends the pool deck’s tropical palette on the homeowners’ existing sofa and lounge chair. In place of a rug, a custom blue trellis graphic painted on the floor adds visual interest. Overhead hangs an Architectural Antiques find, adding to the collected feel of the space.
In the bar, bright bolsters on the banquette recall the pool house palette, while animal prints channel a more exotic feel. The designers’ biggest challenge was designing a moveable back bar that would allow a car to fit in the garage when needed. They repurposed the homeowners’ previous breakfast room breakfront to form the back bar, and then mounted it on barn door hardware to allow it to be moved as needed.
Showcase Home visitors appreciated the playfulness of both spaces. “They are so different and yet so happy together,” Olson says.
