Chintz made a comeback. Large-scale floral is in full bloom again. Even Laura Ashley swept back into the design spotlight. So it was only a matter of time that the pattern-on-pattern-on-pattern look (think decades back to Dorothy Draper and Ralph Lauren) would make its return in spades. For a modern spin, we turned to interior designer Katie Sidenberg, who recently covered every inch of this Wayzata powder room in an orange and white leafy print.
“Pattern on pattern has been used for many years and has never gone out of style,” Sidenberg says. Layering the same pattern on wallpaper and textiles—be it draperies, bedding, or upholstery—can create a very cozy, sophisticated effect in living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms. “The scale can be small or large and dramatic, but color is the key,” notes the designer. “To keep things from looking too jarring or tricky, keep the colors the same, or very compatible, for a successful look.”
