I'm breaking up with my Brita.
That trusty, unwieldy plastic pitcher has traveled with me from fridge to fridge since my college days, but lately it's lost its appeal. It's ugly and it doesn't make my tap water taste any better.
But then, charcoal came into the picture. I'd seen Kishu Binchotan Charcoals ($18) at Foundry Home Goods before, but I finally brought a pack home after feeling dehydrated from avoiding the Brita (the drama!)
The process goes like this:
1. Toss a stick in a pot of boiling water for 10 minutes
2. Fill any pitcher with water and the cooled stick
3. Wait four hours for it to do its purifying work
The result is water that tastes like cold, fresh water straight from the hose in spring. Am I being too poetic about these sticks of charred wood? Maybe, but my skin looks great from all this extra hydration. And on a day like today, I think we could all use it.
