Rosé is red wine that has been short-vatted, meaning the winemaker has let the juice sit on the skins for less time, producing less color and often less acid. It started in red wine–growing regions so they would have something to drink, chilled, on hot summer days. These wines are not your mother’s sweet white zinfandel; they are complex with great fruit and often completely dry. As a rule, they drink young. When jumping into the winemaking world, Brad and Angelina could not have picked a better partner. The Jolie-Pitts purchased a 1,200-acre estate for $60 million from the Perrin family, owners of Chateau Beaucastel. The much- anticipated wine release will make it jump off the shelves. The wine is outstanding, organic, and full of flavor, with flowers and white peaches on the nose plus strawberry and raspberry fruit on your tongue. We may not live like the Jolie-Pitts, but now we can drink like them.
Zestos 2013 Rosado Garnacha
(St. Martin, Spain) $10.99
Zestos means “basket,” and the name honors the large back-basket used to harvest and transport grapes from the vineyard. This delicious rosé would be a deal at twice the price. Made from garnacha planted in 1969 at the extreme elevation of 2,600 feet, it is dry farmed and organic. Grapes are pressed, and just a third of the wine is left on the skins for six to eight hours. It’s floral with granite and chalky minerals, cherry fruit, and the acid of a fresh grapefruit. With just 4,000 cases produced for the entire world, you’ll want to snap up some as soon as possible.
