I have been told by people I trust that front-of-house partner Josh Thoma is out at Bar La Grassa, arguably the hottest restaurant in town. Emails to the principals, people who normally respond darn quick, have gone unreturned and the silence is deafening. I am also hearing related inklings that would make this a much, much bigger story than the typical management shakeup.
Ominous questions are inevitable under the circumstances, because typically the parting of ways within business partnerships takes place during times of struggle. But with a restaurant as insanely successful on every level as this one, the sudden exit of one of the partners is beyond curious.
This is truly a business drama, though, with few implications for day to day operations at La Grassa. The last two times I have been in the joint, Josh wasn’t there and the food/service/ambience was superb. From a culinary perspective this is chef-partner Isaac Becker’s restaurant in almost every sense of the word.
