>> Valhalla Smoke and Ale House is a brewpub freshly opened in the former Hanger Room in sweet little Willerne (nee Mahtomedi). With some seriously Nordic leanings, the menu looks rather thrilling: bone marrow pot pie, fried rabbit bites, smoked pork belly on lefse with lingonberry-mead reduction, venison melt sandwich, and, of course, an Olaf The Stout burger with hopped mayo and bacon-onion jam. Skål, and all that jazz.
>> Heading north this weekend? Maybe swing by Sarah Master's now-open Mr. Roberts Resort on Pengilly's Swan Lake. The hand-sketched menu holds tasty promises of such things as Buffalo cauliflower, lamb bacon BLT, venison stroganoff, and smelt fries. Let's all get out of town, shall we?
>> Bep is a new Vietnamese spot in the Minneapolis skyway, it is pho real. Sorry.
>> From the Hibachi Daruma food truck crew, comes the launch of Sushi Daruma. DMG gave it an early whirl and found: The sushi was fresh and pretty good—but whoa! Small portions. I had a $10 Sake roll (with fresh salmon and avocado) and an $11 white tiger roll with spicy tuna and escolar, and the two together barely made a decent sized lunch. I’ll be back, but thought you should have a heads-up, especially if you’re hungry!
>> Sunday marks the shiny big new day for beer growler sales in Minneapolis! Woohoo! The Growler has a nifty little roundup of Minneapolis breweries where and when you can pick up some Sunday beer. Now, let's keep working on my Sunday bourbon, ok?
>> The brand-spanking-new Norway House is throwing on the party togs this Saturday by hosting Midtsommer Fest. Live music, and makers mart, family games, and more will be featured all day along with food trucks, Mrs. Olson's Lefse, and a craft beverage tent packed with local beers and distilleries (including Skaalvern, which advises you to "pillage responsibly").
>> Just like Diet Coke cancels out cheeseburgers, Bike to Bakeries Day is like a free carb day! The Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition has mapped out a nice little route that includes Bogart's Doughnuts, Butter Bakery, and more. But feel free to hop on your own wheels and make your own stops, many shops will have specials for bikers.
>> It's the best tag sale of the year for the kitchen-obsessed. The Cooks of Crocus Hill yard sale starts today and lasts all weekend, and it really does because they keep refreshing the tables so you won't miss out on the Le Creuset steals if you can't make it tonight. I have scored some serious finds and deals at this sale.
>> Hey, if you're planning on pulling the all nighter at Northern Spark, it's helpful to know where to food-truck-fuel-up. And don't forget, if you can push through till dawn, there's a Bachelor Farmer/Al's Breakfast short stack on your karma plate.
>> If you like your fishstix with a side of sustainability, get to the Fish Bites dinner this Wednesday at the MN Zoo. Snack from 12 restaurants, including The Oceanaire, Sea Change, Kyatchi, and Smack Shack, while promoting education aimed at keeping our oceans strong. Just keep swimming.
>> Is chef Wyatt Evans the next BMOC of St. Paul? Get a preview of his almost-here eatery, Heirloom, at the pop-up he's throwing at Third Bird on June 21. He's got the menu up online, and if you're down with modern farmhouse cooking in the form of lightly smoked whitefish, whey poached rooster, and ash coated brisket, then you're down with him.
