Don’t forget, Monday afternoon: 1:30 p.m., Minneapolis City Hall, room 317 street food hearing taking place and everyone should go. Tell the vocal cadre of small-minded delusionally paranoid business owners who think that street vending of food will negatively impact their business what you think of that idea. Some people really shock me with their ignorance and provincialism.
Chef Shack pal sent me a note that I agree with 100000%. “There is much debate and resistance to this from business owners .City council members have directly informed me that NOW is the time to push this forward, as it may never again surface in legislation.”
I think we need a broader series of rule changes than the ones currently being discussed, but hey, it’s a start. I am convinced that limiting street carts to Hennepin or other micro areas is a mistake. We need cart culture to grow with fewer restrictions, but I am thrilled that we are finally talking about it. The purpose of this hearing is to gather public comment on the proposed amendments to allow mobile food vehicles in the Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District (DID).
These vehicles may offer a wider variety of foods than the food carts currently authorized in downtown. Licensed vehicles would be allowed on approved locations along the public sidewalk or private property. Much of the Hennepin Avenue sidewalk frontage between 5th Street and 9th Street has been determined to be wide enough to allow mobile food vehicles. Other segments of Hennepin Avenue may also be deemed appropriate.
Highlights of the Proposed Amendments Include:
Mobile food vehicles will be allowed in the Downtown Improvement District.
Vehicles may park on sidewalks or private property.
Vendors may sell foods that can be prepared on the vehicle.
Vendors are required to have a current food license.
Vendors are required to submit plans for the vehicle and the location.
I was hoping to be there but one of my best friends lost his Grandpa and I am going to be at the funeral. Jamie’s Gramps would want as many of you at City Hall as possible.
