Remember the other day when it was minus 15 yet again and I was so crabby that I glared at my French press of coffee with a withering rage to melt a thousand suns? Well, maybe I shielded you from it. But seriously.
And don’t even tell me what a good year it is for cross country skiing, because my ears already froze off and were lost in a snowbank. If you’re feeling what I’m feeling, but you don’t have the cash to fly to Mazatlan, here’s my advice. Warm weather beachy getaways. Right here, right now:
922 Main St., Hopkins, 952-935-2708, sambatasteofbrazil.com
Who wants to go to Rio de Janeiro? Well how about Hopkins, for a sweet little Brazilian place where you can get a good caipirinha, a very nice plate of Brazilian feijoada, the black bean, pork hock, and sausage dish with greens, and a Brazilian caramel flan which is awfully, awfully good?
3761 Bloomington Ave. S., Mpls., 612-724-3088, marlascuisine.com
We are big fans of Marla’s here at MSP, and Andrew Zimmern put it as well as I ever could: The jerk chicken is hot and herby and great. If they have the house-made ginger beer, don’t miss it. And the doubles!
What’s a better tiki getaway in Minneapolis, Psycho Suzi’s in Northeast, or the Torpedo Room at Eat Street Social? I’m partial to the Torpedo Room because the cocktails are more delicious, but frankly I’d meet you at either right now. The South Seas! Grass skirts! Bring it on. At Eat Street you can get house-SPAM steam buns next to your very fancy Zombie with house-falernum syrup. So do that!
1. Sonora Grill
3300 E. Lake St., Mpls, 612-722-2500, sonora-grill.com
Been to the brand new Sonora Grill yet? I have, and I think I’m in love. It’s more finished than their well known, well loved Midtown Global Market stall with table service, cocktails, and the whole nine yards. So get a margarita, a beautifully light ceviche, gorgeous, bright guacamole, and a bowl of what are offically the best chilequiles in town, and sit with your back to the window and your sunglasses on. You'll feel like you're on a really, really nice beach vacation. I promise.
