Oh, here’s something to warm the coldest day: January is going to bring a Vellee Deli pop-up restaurant at South Minneapolis’ vaunted Crema Café. It'll be dinner-only, and it'll go all winter long.
Vellee Deli, of course, is one of the best food trucks in Minnesota. It's Asian-centered, and led by Will Xiong and Joyce Truong, who invented the locally-legendary Thai chicken, coconut rice curry burrito, and the gobstoppingly-good Mojo; a banh-mi variation made with lemongrass sausage and shredded papaya. Food nuts like myself have been expecting a brick-and-mortar location for this great food for some time now and not only is it happening, it's happening at Crema Café, maker of some of the best ice cream (made on-site in tiny batches with local cream) in the US. “We have dessert now!” Will Xiong told me. Oh, do they ever.
Details: This new pop-up will debut in January, and will run through May when food truck season starts. It will be dinner-only (and of course take-out). Crema Café has about 30 seats, a very nice beer and wine list, an excellent espresso program, tasty ice cream, and now—Vellee Deli. It's such good news! I am beside myself. January, do your worst, we now have a beacon to get us through. Actually, January, I take it back. Don’t do your worst. I’ve seen your worst, it’s horrible. Instead, January, do your best, so we can all skip over the warm sidewalks for Vellee Deli burritos and the best affogatto (ice cream with espresso) in town!
