Many of you know and love Minneapolis’ Bryant-Lake Bowl, Red Stag Supperclub, Barbette, Pat’s Tap, Gigi’s Cafe, Bread & Pickle, Tiny Diner, and The Third Bird. But only some of you know the instigators and chefs behind these local establishments.
Kim Bartmann owns and operates all eight, along with soon-to-open Champagne bar, Trapeze. It’s a job one cannot do alone. As such, she has enlisted the help of Nick O’Leary as culinary director. Nick brings more than 11 years of notable experience to the table: Saffron, as sous chef under Sameh Wadi, Hotel Minneapolis, Travail and Butcher & The Boar, along with competing on “Iron Chef of America.” In 2013, as part-owner and culinary director, he concepted and opened Borough, Coup d’eta and Marche. Later that year he joined Smack Shack as culinary director.
Aiming to collaborate with local chefs, Kim and Nick are launching an intimate pop-up dinner series at Loring Park dining destination, The Third Bird. The inaugural event, titled AUTOBAHN, will be hosted by Guest Chef Donald Gonzalez, formerly of St. Paul’s Forepaugh, Napa Valley’s French Laundry, New York’s Waldorf Astoria, and San Francisco’s Lulu.
From duck schnitzel to strudel rolls, Gonzalez’s 5-course meal will merge traditional German cuisine with the technical preparations he mastered while working in some of the best kitchen around the world. “Growing up, my father served in the U.S. Air Force,” said Gonzalez. “We lived in Germany for four years and traveled the world together. These cultural experiences continue to impact my culinary inspiration.”
AUTOBAHN will take place from Thursday, Oct. 13 to Saturday, Oct. 15. Cocktail hour begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $75.00 per person, including the multi-course dinner, tax and gratuity. Seats are limited to 16 guests per night. Reserve your spot here.
Details on November’s pop-up dinner to be announced soon!
