Whenever people travel abroad, they come home and lament about our local foodisphere. Why can't we be more cutting edge like New York? Why does Spain get all the exciting food?
People, I'll give you excitement. I'll give you cutting edge. Can you honestly say there are any greater innovators than those who rack their brains every year before the Great Minnesota Get-Together? Facing a feeding frenzy of thousands, these good folks can't be worried about the ancient techniques of charcuterie, they have to focus on future improvements: Can you deep fry it? Can you jam a stick in it? Can you wrap it in a potato, jam a stick in it, AND deep fry it? Please, Jean-Georges has already turned tail and skipped town, and I think Ferran would have nothing to say. NYC: You can keep your Momofuku ... Ssam on a stick (OAS)? Booooring.
Here now, are the new foods and concessionaires from your local pacesetters. Put down the Pronto Pup and embrace the future in fastfoodsmanship.
Andre's Watermelon: Chocolate covered watermelon OAS.
Apple Lil's: Funnel cake fries (funnel cake in fry form with choco dipping sauce, because you needed that broken down).
Arctic Island Slushes: NEW to the GMGT! DIY mix n' match slushie flavors. Suicide mix anyone?
Ball Park Cafe: Brat burgers. Yawn.
Blue Moon Dine-In Theater: Fry dogs (french fry covered deep fried hot dog OAS). If they can figure out how to get the ketchup inside as well, I'm in.
Famous Dave's: Peach-glazed pork cheeks OAS. Seems a little "safe" for the folks who brought you chocolate covered bacon.
Giggle's Campfire Grill : Sunfish filets in a boat.
Green Mill: Footlong dessert pizza OAS (it's a sweet cream cheese, cinnamon, and sugar story, not so much a pizza story).
Harry Singh's: NEW to the GMGT! Jerk or curried chicken roti, jerk wings, and Trinidadian "doubles" (bara bread filled with hot sauce, curried chickpeas, and chutney). Shazam!
Lynn's Lefse: Swedish meatballs and gravy.
Main Street Butcher Block: Pot roast sundae. I kid you not. Scoop your mashed potatoes like ice cream, top with pot roast, gravy, corn and a cherry tomato, and it's still a freak wreck.
Ole & Lenas: Deep-fried Norwegian banana split and krumkake.Come on little Svendetta, you know you have to finish your hot dish OAS before you can have your krumkake!
Patinella's Chicken Grill: NEW to the GMGT! Grilled chicken and rice bowls in a variety of ethnic styles including Brazilian, Italian, and Mexican. (Sounds WAY too healthy).
Ragin Cajun: Beignets!
Renewing the Countryside: NEW to the GMGT! Local do-gooders are offering baby watermelons and caprese salad OAS in the Progress Center. Aw, shucks.
Sonny's Spiral Spuds: Tornado Potato! Spiral cut seasoned spuds OAS with dipping options.
Spam Burgers: Breakfast Spamwiches (Spam, egg, and cheese) and open-faced Spamwiches with cream o' mushroom soup (because you can save carbs on that other slice of bread).
Texas Steak Out: NEW to the GMGT! Steak dinner OAS (cubed steak, potatoes, onions, peppers, and a dinner roll ... can't you get my Caesar on there?) plus brisket-stuffed baked potato and chili in a bread bowl. Yee. Haw.
