That’s a pizza box, chums.
Trust me, I am all for a donut break every once in a while, and I couldn't be happier that our local office donut game has been raised (!) by the likes of Bogart's and Angel Food Bakery. How else are we to celebrate budgetary achievements and fare-thee-well's for employees' last days? And yet, I am a savory girl living in a glazed world and I often wish there was something salty sitting in the middle of the conference room table.
Well, now there can be.
I found out that the New Bohemia food truck is selling GIANT DEEP FRIED PRETZELS. On a daily basis. I know. The giant pretzel is a newish trend you can find at some beer bars such at Craft in Woodbury, World of Beer in St. Paul, and of course, the New Bohemia Wurst + BierHaus locations around town.
But since the food truck doesn't have an oven, they've been forced to deep fry them, resulting in a much more badass bread product! The deep-frying puffs it up a bit more and gives it a superior crispness and crunch that breaks away to a soft, plush interior. And it stays hotter: I walked a block, took a picture, then walked it up to my 5th floor office, and it was still wicked hot to the tear.
Hit with salt, it's also served with two pots of melty and spicy cheese sauce. It's ausgezeichnet and it's $14, and it took 9 of us to bring it down. Though be warned, I did want a beer afterward.
As far as I'm concerned, while the truck is out in downtown, I'm on donut hiatus. And though this is a specialty of the truck, which can also brilliantly be found at breweries, you may also ask the New Bohemia brick and mortars to fry the pretzel, they said they'd happily accommodate. Prost!
