Peter Lilienthal, our ethnic food guru, gets all kinds of interesting questions sent to firstname.lastname@example.org (feel free to bombard), so I thought I might share some of his pithy and knowledgeable responses.
I've lived in the Twin Cities for a little more than five years and have yet to find myfavorite Thai appetizer, Mee Krob. In Hawaii and San Diego, where Ipreviously lived, every Thai restaurant had this on the menu. Any ideawhere I can find it here?
Mee Hungry for Mee Krob
Although it's not a dish I'm typically on the lookout for (no particularreason), I did a bit of searching for you and actually found a placethat proclaims to have the very best version in the Twin Cities. It'scalled Bahn Thai restaurant and it's located in Plymouth. It's listed as item E57 and is available with any protein you desire. Truth totell, I don't recall ever having heard of the place, but their menuseems pretty impressive.
When it comes to Thai Food, my absolute favorite current spot is ahole-in-the-wall in St. Paul called Bangkok Thai Deli. It's by far themost authentic I've come across of late. Unfortunately, they don't havea website and although someone took a snapshot of a menu and you canread portions of it, my eyesight isn't sufficiently good to pick outwhether Mee Krob is on the list. If I were a betting person, I'd wagerthat it is, but the best thing is to call and ask. For the record, youcan bring your own beer or wine to dinner here and it's very easy on thepocketbook. Don't let the exterior scare you off; the people are greatand the food is wonderful. Hope that's helpful and by all means, let me know what you discover. And if you plan to go to Bangkok, I can easily be enticed to go alongand even pay my way!
