I love a fresh alternative to my skyway eating, so I was very happy to hear that a little place called Simpls would be opening in the habitrail above Marquette and 6th.
Opened on Monday, Simpls sits right across from the former Ipotli (now unfortunately named but still tasty Spicy Touch Indian Grill) and kitty-corner to Zen Box. It's pronounced like SIMPLES, in case like me you spend your stroll over pondering sim-pless, sim-muples, or sim-minneapolis.
The vibe is all barnwood-farmy-healthy good food eating. It's a grab 'n' go situation, no tables, just a few counter seats in the back. The front has a few market bins stacked with local products like Bliss Granola, Buddy's Nut Butters, Grey Duck Chai, and other snacky bits. Pick up some oatmeal and milk for breakfast, grab a pastry or muffin, stock up the cube with healthier options so that you don't commit a vending machine sin. Great! There are also chilled cases along the wall with pre-made salads and sandwiches. Initial options include smoked ham and cheddar, grilled veggie torta, chicken salad, pesto and cheese, plus a hummus and veggie wrap. Full sized orders of either are $7.50 and half sandwiches are $4 (half salads are coming soon). Around the corner are hot buckets of soup, and you can grab a half sandwich and cup of soup for $7.50.
The ingredients are fresh and high quality, loved the bits of arugula in the chef's salad mix and the mostarda on the smoked ham and cheese sandwich, but portions are a bit shy of the price right now. I'm sure they'll get the mix right, but a scant slice of ham on a half-sandwich does not a return eater get.
For me, I will be popping in for the Verdant Tea kombucha on tap! That is the best kombucha in the city, in my mind. So excited to have that nearby, not to mention the Peace Coffee. Check them out, they're super new and still fresh to the scene, but very friendly and excited to be there.
