I was lured to Anoka yesterday, and was thusly rewarded with a perfect bite.
Lumpy's Velvet Lounge has opened in a tiny corner bar space just off the Anoka main drag. My friend, Marta, who used to be my manager when I was slinging drinks, did the luring. And now she's thrown in with a funky partnership and owns part of a bar/resto in Anoka. Go figure.
"Come for the piggy pots," she said. Yeah, I'll drive for that.
So it seems that her partnership includes one Jorge Guzman, who used to cook for Tejas and most recently did a turn as Chef de Cuisine for Corner Table. Let me just say this: Jorge's got some ideas about bar snacks.
I had some kettle chips that were jacked with blue cheese and hot sauce, some tater tots that were given a fennel dusting alongside some spicy ketchup, and the messiest burger I've had in a spell. The Lumpy burger was dripping with American whiz, caramelized onions, and secret sauce. A damn worthy lunch for $6.99 with fries.
But it was the piggy pots that had me scraping the basket: he puts down some fries, slathers them in American whiz (get over yourself), tops them with house-made pulled pork, and "spicy pickled stuff," which turns out to be home-recipe giardiniera. So with the right forkful you get a cheesy, porky, rich bite topped with a spicy snap.
