Yesterday was a strange day at the MN State Fair, what with power outages and potentially scary weather, and for me, numerous shuttle bus rides and media appearances. But I did manage to get some snacking in, so I just wanted to let you know what was what, in case you're still headed out and haven't read the 642 other posts about fair food.
I still can't leave the fairgrounds without a pretzel from the Pretzel Haus. No other pretzel compares.
I looooved the mango on a stick from Safari Express, which was lightly dusted with zingy spices that made it the perfect salty, spicy, sweetly sticky bite. This is one to grab when you need to reset your mouth after too much fried food.
Moe and Joe's little toasty grilled marshmallow, chocolate, and banana sandwich is as good a melty mess as people have been saying it is. For me the killer was the bread.
Bacon and corn flatbread pizza thingy at Blue Moon was another refreshingly non-fried choice, especially as a side to the Kramarczuk Polish sausage they're grilling. (During the power outage, the sausage grill sallied on.)
Let's just deal with the whole chicken fried bacon situation at Giggles: You know what you're getting into, it's chicken fried bacon. Yes it's a crunchy salt lick. The side dipping "gravy" has cinnamon in it, oddly, which I skipped because mmmmmmm, salt lick.
I wanted to hate the deep-fried cheeseburger from Axels, I was sure I would. But it was obnoxious and nasty in all the right ways. Ask for another pickle and make sure each bite includes a bit of the salty green to play with the hot cheesy mess within.
Shut up with your white trash talkin' about the Pickle Dog. If loving a pickle wrapped in seasoned cream cheese and pastrami is wrong, I don't wanna be right. And have you seen the new big green digs for the Preferred Pickle? Nicely done.
The Rainbow Ice Cream stand (but ONLY the one between Judson and Carnes, methinks), makes you think you should avoid it like unicorns and glitter, but it actually has a beautiful lingonberry ice cream float. A highlight!
Best place to get a beer? Midway Men's Club. Hangin' out and crackin' wise with the retired cops pulling taps is half the fun. Smartly situated just out of the Kidway, for tag-teaming 'rents.
Yes, I'm going back Friday. I didn't get my Dairy Barn malt.
