Pie. You have to be some kind of deviant not to like pie, amIright?
And if there was a season to pie (which thank the maker there isn't) it might be now, heralding the baking and feasting season just over the glen. So it makes perfect sense that one of our most prominent bakers, James Beard Award nominated Michelle Gayer of Salty Tart, is throwing a pie pop-up all November.
Power, Corruption, and Pies is the name of the game that happens on Power Pie Mondays at Hola Arepa. All November, Gayer will be set up from 3-7pm on Mondays, when the restaurant is closed, to sell four different flavors of pie. Gayer told me it could be "a malted banana cream pie, some kind of salted caramel apple, perhaps a chocolately meringue situation, you know definitely creamy and luscious, and like a pear cranberry streusel." But flavors could change every week.
Will there be enough pies?? It's a first come, first serve situation, you can't reserve your pies ahead cheeky bit, and when they sell out they sell out. Prices will likely start around $20, Gayer is still costing out labor and ingredients. "Well, sure I'll show up with 50 pies and we'll see how it goes. If we don't sell it will just be a big pie and bourbon party at my house that night."
Hopefully the pop-up will have enough gas to continue through December, when pie becomes medically necessary for some. Stay tuned to the web, @PowerPies, and their Instagram account for updates and power pie porn.
