Mexico City ants, Quintonil
I went to Mexico City a couple of weeks ago for Delta Sky. If you want the whole story, you'll have to wait for it! Although I'm still trying to process and understand my adventures, I can tell you that the food of Mexico City blew my mind. Such fresh, cliché-free, bold flavors—such precise technique. Most definitely one of the great food cities of the world.
But I'm not telling you just to brag. I'm telling you, Minneapolis and St. Paul, because you have a rare opportunity to taste the food of some of the great chefs of Mexico City. A cadre of top chefs will be here October 13, 14, and 15, cooking at the side of Jim Christiansen at Heyday, Mike DeCamp at Monello, and Ryan Cook at Sea Change. The plan is that each Mexico City chef will be cooking a special menu at one of the restaurants for three days running.
At Heyday, the chef paired with Jim Christiansen will be Arturo Fernandez (Oaxacan cheese sphere!), at Monello, the chef with Mike DeCamp will be Fernando Martinez (pennyroyal watermelon!), and there will be two chefs working with Ryan Cook at Sea Change, Diego Niño and Cesar Vazquez, (lamb barbacoa!). If you do go, and you Instagram your pics (see the bottom of the press release below) you might win a free trip to Mexico City to eat as well as I did. Even if you don't win, from what I have tasted lately, you'll already be a winner.
Mexican Chef Exchange Comes to Twin Cities with Unique Dining Events
WHAT: In 2015, Sabores CDMX (Flavors of Mexico City) was launched to promote Mexico City gastronomy and encourage international tourism to Mexico City. This program pairs renowned chefs from Mexico City with U.S. chefs to create culinary experiences for diners that capture the essence and flavor of Mexico City. For its 2016 program, the Tourism Trust selected Minneapolis-St. Paul, based on its vibrant culinary community.
Four chefs from Mexico City (see below) will spend the week of October 10 in the Twin Cities area, partnering with three host restaurants and local hotspots. During the week’s dinner services, patrons will have the opportunity to order from an authentic Mexican menu, specially prepared by the chefs from Mexico City.
WHO: Four renowned chefs from Mexico City (Chef Fernando Martínez of Yuban and Seneri; Chef Arturo Fernández of La República and Raíz; and Chefs Cesar Vázquez Trejo and Diego Niño of NEXO) and three renowned chefs from the Twin Cities (Chef Jim Christiansen of Heyday; Chef Mike DeCamp of Monello; and Chef Ryan Cook of Sea Change).
The chef exchange dinners, open to the public, will take place during service hours at participating restaurants the evenings of October 13, 14 and 15 (Thursday-Saturday).
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Participating diners will be qualified to enter a contest for a trip for two to Mexico City, including airline tickets, lodging for two nights, and dinner at one of the participating restaurants. To enter the contest, diners must follow @Sabores_CDMX on Instagram and share a photo of their meal using the hashtag #MexicoCityFlavors.
No advance tickets are needed, though participating restaurants encourage diners to make reservations.
