This Fresh Forkin Friday I am running around on a secret mission. It won't be secret for long, so I'm not trying to be too teasy. But while I go about town, I must say, I am continually floored by the generosity of our town chefs. They get asked over and over by gobs of worthy causes every week to show up at this event or donate gift certificates to that event. Many of them spend their days off standing behind a table in a ballroom handing out small plates and smiling and chatting to ladies in cocktail dresses who have had maybe one too many bourbons (ahem). I just want to say thanks. Thanks for your generosity, thanks for your time, thanks for your wonderful food, and thanks for continually helping make this a great place to live.
Rick Nelson tweeted it, then someone e-mailed me that they'd stopped in, and it seems that Rachel's in Nordeast is, in fact, open! The long dark former Bobino has new life as a neighborhood cafe serving burgers, sandwiches, and wings.
Monday is the opening of Masu in Nordeast, but there have already been copious tweets and pictures floated from the pre-opening dinners. Looks like a big bowl of fun.
BC2 is closed due to a giant act of nature. A boulder fell from the rock wall above and crushed the back of the building. The building has been condemned, but BC2 will rise again in another location.
Good news for lunchers, both The Lowbrow and Mozza Mia are open for lunch. Lowbrowers can enjoy specials such as tomato soup and freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, while Mozzers will be happy to see there's a bunch of new sandwiches on the menu, maybe a prosciutto pannini or meatball slider will do the trick.
Did you know that this weekend's American Craft Council show has a cake competition? Well not so much a competition as a celebration. Local bakers have paired up with crafty artists to create gorgeous cakes inspired by art. Some of the original pieces are breathtaking, so imagine how our local pastry world will run with it.
I just want you to SAVE THE DATE for the Royal Wedding y'all! And where else would you celebrate it but at Brit's? On Friday 4/29 Brit's will be open at 5 a.m. for all the fun on the big screen, and of course there'll be English breakfast and bagpipes available. In the afternoon, the royal couple (ahem) will make an appearance at the pub, along with Crispin's exclusive "The Union" cider, made specially for this day, this event. Don't forget afternoon high tea, then it's a royal reception party including a Beatles cover band. Let's make a day of it, shall we?
