[caption id="attachment_2776" align="alignright" width="250" caption="I'd like to thank my prep-cook ..."][/caption]This Fresh Forkin' Friday I'll be on Twin Cities Live giving the deets on some snacks you can make for your very own Oscar party at home. For the Night of Nights I decided to go retro, largely because there is so much flashback food in this year's Best Picture lineup. Naturally, The Help is hugely centered on food, I defy anyone to see that movie without craving fried chicken. Southern cooking is SO HOT right now, but to put the retro spin on it, I'll be making deviled eggs and cucumber tea sandwiches. Midnight In Paris is another flick that plays with the past, and although I'd love to go crazy with escargot in puff pastry, I thought I'd keep it simple with mini-quiche Lorraine and pommes frites. The best part about all these snacks is that you don't actually have to have a party. If you're planning on sinking into the couch in your glitziest fleece and bunny slippers, there's no reason why you couldn't nosh on some cucumber sammies and quiche in between ripping on dresses and marveling at the botox. However you roll, I gotcha.*****CLOSES
Didja know that Panera on East Hennepin (across from Surdyk's) closed suddenly? Who should take that prime location? Hmmmm.
Smalley's 87 closed to become Alley Sports Tavern which will, shockingly, be a sports bar.*****If you want to go out and glam it up for the Oscars, you have a few choices. First, there's the fancy dress up OFFICIAL Oscar Party at the Cowles, tickets run from $50-$165 and it's a benefit for the Aegis Foundation. Then there's the free and very unofficial Oscars party at Brit's where the 2 Gingers will be flowing and the trivia will be sassy.*****Pop your collar and dig out your Members Only for Pizzeria Lola and DJ Jake Rudh as they throw this Saturday's '80s Pizza Party. Featured for one night only will be the Taco Pie (too bad you can't throw it home with some Sunkist Natural or a Rondo: The Thirst Crusher) and you'll get to sprinkle some Pop-Rocks on your soft-serve. Rock some Flock of Seagulls hair and you might win a $50 gift card!*****Gingko Coffeehouse and Coffee Gallery are celebrating 20 years in business. The two iconic independent houses are declaring March 2 Customer Appreciation Day with discounts and live music all day.*****Midtown Global Market is celebrating Winter in the Market this Sunday. You can visit your favorite vendors from the Fulton Farmers Market, the kids can have some fun with the healthy eating demo from FriendChip Farms, and there will be a few trucks in attendance to fix your food truck cravings.*****We were all a-flutter this week with the announcement of the James Beard Award semi-finalists because our local kids were WELL represented! So nice to see some recognition from The Bigs. Particularly, I'm super proud of Johnny Michaels for his first nod. The list will be narrowed and the finalists will be announced March 19, so stay tuned . . .
