You know how they try to trot out Wolfgang Puck as the star chef of Oscar Night and make us all think that food is somehow important to the event? As if nervous stars in their glammiest glam, packed and stuffed into posh frocks and limos would really even give a sideways glance to food? The real food is consumed by all of us, who don't have to worry about paparazzi catching us with a mouth full of cheese fries, ever immortalizing us on a global scale with sauce on our chin. In fact, for me, there's no greater pleasure than copping a squat on the couch in the fleeciest fleece and enjoying unglamorous food as I watch the peacocks strut down the red carpet. This Fresh Forkin' Friday, I'm on the search of Bugels and EZ-Cheese.
River Chocolate Company has opened a cute little shop at 43rd and Upton in Linden Hills. Besides the sultry chocolate sauces (laced with whisky, y'all) that they've been selling at the St. Paul Farmers Market for years, Dierdre and Allan have stocked the shop with a bunch of tasty, locally made treats. And now there's coffee to help stem your sugar rush.
Los Ocampo has opened another location in Seeger Square, its first St. Paul outpost. I know you love the pozole, but it's still all about the huarache for me.
CLOSES & NEXT
Kozy's Steak and Seafood in the Galleria will close on March 26. Even though there's an official "no comment" from the Parasole boys, on the bottom of all their press releases is a little blurb announcing a Pittsburgh Blue opening in Galleria in 2011. I think we can all do the math here. I'm sure Tim McKee will be put to use designing some super fancy hash browns for the Len Druskin set.
FYI, if you had plans to sneak into 20.21 one more time before the March 12 closing date, don't plan on lunch. Lunch service has already been suspended.
The Liberty Custard spot is being annexed by neighboring Tangletown Gardens. The owners, who dabbled with a little Chez Panisse flavored farm dinner last year, plan to open a farm-to-table eatery supplied by the spoils of their Plato, MN farm.
Today kicks off the celebrations for the new Kitchen in the Market at MGM. The shared commercial kitchen space is HQ to Tastebud Tart's cooking classes, and this weekend you can check out all the goods: equipment, cheffy grab-n-go snacks, commercial grade tools, and more!
Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday, and you know what that means: Free pancakes! Free cakes at IHOP (with a suggested donation to the Children's Miracle Network).
On Friday, March 11, France44 is hosting another dinner (and there's cheese everywhere at that place) with guest chef Mike Phillips of Green Ox. So along with a cheesemonger and wine expert on hand, you get the current local king of charcuterie as well. Reservations fill up, $75 will get you five courses.
Dakota is channeling the Big Easy for Mardi Gras y'all. Starting Sunday and lasting through March 7, chef Jack is cooking up a three-course menu for $30 that delivers Mississippi redfish and jumbo lump crab with creole touches.
