This Fresh Forkin' Friday happens to fall on May Day! I've never danced under a Maypole or had an anonymous basket of goodies hung on my door handle, nor have I any special feasts or dishes planned for the day. But at Larry U, we'd wake up on May Day to a campus lawn freshly planted with Dum Dums and every bit of sidewalk chalked with "Hooray! Hooray! The first of May, outdoor lovin' begins today!" Go forth, frolic.
- Cowboy Slim's is open in the old Campiello space in Uptown, Yee-Haw! The digs are wagon-wheel chic, and the menu is comfort food with a Wild West edge. Don't go thinking it's pure Tex-Mex/Southwest, though. There's pizza, tater-tot hotdish, and pot pie on the menu as well as ribs, wings, and nachos.
- The Armatage Room, across from sibling Cafe Maude, will be picking up the lunch shift. Starting Monday, Armatage opens from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch Monday through Friday. I've had the bison burger, which killed, and I'm heading over for the BLT and E(gg).
- The Cottagewood Store opens this weekend, which means that Saleh Hamshari's famed Rotisseria chicken wil be again available to the formerly aimless and addicted.
Carbs are BACK! What's with all the pasta love all of a sudden? Clearly you've heard that Josh Thoma and the Beckers are going to open Bar La Grassa in the old Babalu spot, offering plates of fresh and dried pastas. Then there's the planned opening of an Italian spot called Sauce in the old La Bodega space. And right across the street, in the ill-fated Aronas spot, the former Arezzo chef will be opening a place called Risotto? Not to mention the freshly opened Tosca.
Wonder what the Broders think of all this.
I'm just saying. I heard that the Times Bar/Jitters space is already in serious negotiations with some big-name cats.
Unless you've been under a rock, you know that Smashburger opens next week (May 9th) in St. Anthony. Sneaky peekers will want to get to Nicollet Mall on Monday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., where the Smashmobile will be offering samples to what will no doubt be a massive throng.
Bored of the same old after-work wings? Meritage is throwing down with buffalo frog legs, a snacky feature of its new Happy Hour (Tu-F, 4-6 p.m.), which also offers discounts on wine, cocktails, and other food specials. BONUS: The brasserie is open this Monday as a special favor to hungry pre-Springsteen fans.
Today marks the launch of Porter & Frye's new Happy Hour (M-F, 3-6 p.m.), featuring all by-the-glass wines and bar menu items for half price, plus $3 tap beers.
In celebration of Mother's Day weekend and the annual bonsai show at the Como Park Japanese Garden, Fuji-Ya is throwing a three-course dinner all next weekend. A deal at $50 for two people, each course is paired with wine or sake, and a portion of the proceeds go to the Japanese Garden Fund.
