OK chums, this is NOT the last Friday round up blog, but there will be a name change and some fun stuff launching in March. In the meantime, have you seen the Best Restaurants issue on stands? Well, to go along with the issue, we shot a little video of some of the chefs and restaurateurs who make up the food scene in this town. We asked them what they thought about how we all got here and where we are all headed. I gotta say, it’s kinda wonderful.
Mac’s Fish ‘n’ Chips opens their new Minneapolis location tomorrow at 54th and Lyndale. The chipper is one of St. Paul’s favorite institutions and South Minny should be psyched to get a hold of some battered halibut and cod just in time for Lent.
Birchwood is closed, but popping open for breakfast at Verdant Tea. The new menu is SO COOL because it’s a bridge between American and rural Chinese breakfast traditions. Check out hoisin-glazed bacon, scallion sweet corn pancakes with sambal maple syrup, some of the best potstickers I’ve ever had, and a savory buckwheat crepe layered with mushrooms, black bean paste, pickled root vegetables, and egg. Plus there are tea pairings with each dish. This food will only be available for a short time, but you can get it starting on Saturday from 8am to noon, seven days a week.
Wilde Roast is celebrating 10 crazy years this week, go check out the Erin Schwab show (she wails!) next Thursday. Then visit their Kickstarter for the up and coming Mattie’s on Main project which should bring live cabaret to the river front!
Let’s give a mighty big barbaric yawp to the kids at Dinner on The Farm who have secured a deal with Brooklyn Brewery to host farmy events all over the WORLD together. That’s bringing Minnesota cool to the rest of the fools, y’all.
Also, if you want to get in on one of their neat events, check out this latest Tropix Cinnefeast they host with Sound Unseen. It might allay your recent winter fight or flight tendencies. It’s tropical, it’s on March 23rd, it’s all-inclusive movie/food/drinks/fun … but it is limited so get on it. You need something to look forward to.
Here’s something to be proud of: The 12 Most Minnesotan Drinks You’ll Find In The TC. Because self-referentialism is a thing.
If your kids are driving you ape, bring them to The Big Thrill Factory and let them run amok this weekend. Saturday is the 1 year anniversary and there’ll be $1 bowling, $1 beverages, and $1 cupcakes …. Also, bring a book/iPad, you can sit and have beer and a really decent freshly-made pizza while you remember days as a single human.
Also, go to the Home & Garden Show and pretend there will be such a thing as gardens again. Really, there’s a fun line up all weekend on the kitchen stage.
Heading to an Oscar Party this weekend? Pick up a rillettes snack pack from France 44 so you can feel like you’re red-carpet fancy even if you’re just fleece-wrapped and on your couch (read: me).
