Many of you know I have a radio show on MyTalk 107.1 and that every Saturday from 1-2 p.m. I get to yammer on about food with my eating partner, Stephanie Hansen. Well, she'll be taking a break from the show for a bit while she battles an aggressive form of breast cancer that lead her to a double mastectomy yesterday. Shansey is one of my favorite people on the planet for two main reasons: She's honestly thrilled by food and she lacks that Minnesota Nice Filter, which means she'll truly tell you whatever she's thinking, the minute she's thinking it. I've seen her tell newscasters that they look "so much skinnier in person," and that they "might want to wear Spanx" while meaning it in the most constructive, positive way possible. If a chef comes over and asks her how her food is, she's really going to tell him, really. Sometimes, when I get caught up in the obsessive nature of the food world, it will be her honest and true excitement over a rack of oysters that brings it back home. And it sucks to know that she'll be going through a round of chemo where she's fearful of losing her hair, but maybe moreso of what it might do to her taste and desire to eat. A small price to pay in exchange for actually being here, I know, but it takes my favorite eating partner out of the game for awhile, making my food life a little less sparkly. So in her honor, this Fresh Forkin' Friday, I'm going to support The Blue Door Pub, where later this spring in conjunction with Rock The Cure, you'll be able to order a special limited-time Boobie Blucy burger. Thanks to everyone sending messages of hope and good vibes, if you want to check in on Shansey, check out her Caring Bridge.
Can it be that spring has sprung a bit early this year? It has in St. Paul, the Dari-ette Drive-In is open for business! Note that they'll have shorter hours (from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) while it's still chilly.
It looks like 20.21 will close on March 12th, and Gather will take it's place sometime in April.
It's only the semis people, but the bigwigs love them some Minnies! The James Beard semi-finalists were announced, and Food & Wine launched a People's Choice category for the Best New Chef award. Go vote!
If you have cupcake fatigue, might I suggest you choose something a little more hefty, with honest girth and less foofiness? I just think it's important for you to know that Buttercream Bakery has launched 10 new flavors of whoopie pies, that's all.
I can tell you we are all excited about Brit's Pub Pie and a Pint Night featuring two spectacular foodstuffs: Cask conditioned Winter Ale from Summit and $5 meat pies. The "real ale" is unfiltered and unpasteurized and tapped straight from the barrel (after all the pints have been poured, it's gone). The pies include steak and mushroom, chicken pot, and shepherd's as worthy companions to a night of ale-ing
Starting this Sunday, D'Amico is launching a Date Night special at it's five full-service restos. Here's the gig: You and your sweetie or bestie can enjoy a three-course meal and share a bottle of wine for $50. Sunday's are the new Friday anyway, you know?
