I know you're dealing from the void left by the lack of State Fair coverage. And I'm sure you were hoping to fill it with some joyous football-type filler, but it didn't happen. So this Fresh Forkin' Friday, I am telling you to buck up camper! It's apple season, it's the harvest, it's tailgating season! They can't lose every game! Maybe you need a talisman, a good-luck charm to help lift your sagging summer spirits. Tailgaters, I give you the bacon-cheese-turtleburger for your parking-lot dominance. Go forth and conquer.
If you haven't been cursed with three consecutive days of lunch plans, like I have, then maybe you've already been to Sameh Wadi's new food truck: World Street Kitchen. Jealously, I've watched as tweeters tweet up curried chicken bahn mi and salted caramel ice cream sandwiches. The big red truck will be parked at 5th and Nicollet. Get there.
Gorkha Palace (which I thought was going to be named Yak & Yeti) is now open in the old Mairin's Table space in Nordeast. Rashim Bhattachan and Sarala Kattel are offering the same yummy momos they've been selling at the market, along with a very affordable menu of Nepali, Indian, and Tibetan dishes.
Bukhara Indian Bistro is now open in Wayzata. Joginder Cheema has taken over the strip-mall space that once housed Istanbul and is cooking some Northern Indian food. Yay for me, as I pass this place every day. Can't wait to see what Peter L. thinks of it.
The Purple Sandpiper Bakehouse & Pub is now up and running in Bloomington. Running the kitchen is chef Ryan Aberle, who lastly cooked at Ringo and before that, NorthCoast. The menus seem cheffy: slow roasted duck confit flatbread, open-faced lobster BLT with fennel aioli, sumac rack of lamb with Marcona almond barley risotto. Plus there's a daily tasting menu that is nicely paired with wine OR craft beer. Like that.
Opening this weekend is Poor Richard's Commonhouse, which is the replacement concept for the axed Major's in Bloomington. It's an American-Pub story they're telling, with savvy beverages, game room, and dance club. Let's all just be thankful they didn't decide to plug another Ciento in there.
It's Oktoberfest season in case you didn't get the memo. This weekend, the Minneapolis version on the riverfront, complete with a blubberific beer-fueled 5k. Sign me up.
Sunday Sept. 12 is the Grand Opening of my cute little Harvest Moon co-op. There will be door prizes, farmes for the meeting, samples, and more!
