This Fresh Forkin' Friday I'm going to keep it short, because I know you are all knee deep in Best of/End of/Worst of/What I Ate of 2013 lists. So I'll just be nice and only throw in one thing, the one most important round-up, call-out, summation that I can muster ... 2013: the very last year that people employ the balsamic drizzle. Please? I really think it needs banishing. I know it makes the plate look sassy and the kitchen may get excited by using their little Clairol bottles to play painty-plate, but it has to stop! Throwing the sticky sweetness all over a lovely poached egg is criminal, especially when there's no mention on the menu that it's coming. There's one restaurant in town that is so enamored of the drizzle that he hits EVERY EFFING PLATE with it ... balsamic is not a small flavor, do you really think it just universally goes with everything???!?!??! It does not. There. Done.
Sonora Grill is open in Longfellow, y'all.
Looks like Eater says Tiger Sushi 2 is kaput.
Kikugawa won't stay dark, the neighboring Wilde Roast boys are taking over the spot to launch Mattie St. Clair's Spirits House on Main Street.
Boozers, revelers, kith and kin of mine ... check out the holiday haps at South Lyndale Liquor this weekend. Both Johnny Michaels and the Easy & Oskey crew will be on hand mixing up drinks, plus you can taste the newest and prettiest local gin in town, Solveig from Far North Spirits (which officially hits shelves and bars tonight).
Speaking of small batch local distilling ... Norseman Distillery has launched their vodka in a sassy yellow bottle that is a hot gift for the stylish home bar. Looks like they are in a lot of stores, but have been running out so call ahead to be sure.
And if you've got your sights set on OWNING the drink situation at your New Year's bash this year, might I suggest enrolling for a little tutelage from the Marvelians. Marvel Bar Cocktail Class #4: Sparkling Cocktails is being held on Dec. 28 and for $75 you get to apprentice and learn about sparkling wines, how to use them in cocktails, and practice sipping them (we all need practice). Plus there are take away materials so you can later walk the walk.
If you're out in my neck of the woods tonight, head to Monies for a Prairie Dogs pop-up. Srsly, Monies (the old Keg & Cork for you 80's kids) is a righteous dive bar in Maple Plain with a dirt parking lot and guys with non-ironic work shirts, but yeah who doesn't love a good tube steak, so come on.
Good news ... Summit has announced that starting in January the tap room will be open both Fridays and Saturdays. And if you go buy a pint tonight from 3-8pm, you'll score a FREE 27th Anniversary .5L mug (helllllooooo, buy a beer for yourself, score a free gift for your roomie/Dad/Helpdesk Tech)
And here, Pictures of Hipsters Taking Pictures of Food. Have fun.
