"I only drink Champagne when I'm happy and when I'm sad." Lily Bollinger
Is there anything more festive than a glass full of bubbles? It just rings in the gathering season so appropriately, no? Bring bubbles into your life and before you know it, you'll be loquaciously popping corks to celebrate dinner with friends or even just for sitting on the floor wrapping presents and watching Love Actually (ahem). You deserve it. We all deserve it.
If you want to really celebrate with bubbles, or just get to know a bit more about the sparklers available to you, here's a list of events, classes, and general frivolity which will clearly make your season merrier and bright. Trust me on this one.
Jason Kallson of Twin Cities Wine is hosting a few smashing classes:
- Champagne Master Class Part 1: This is the big foundation builder. Get your full understanding of the process, the region, the codes on the the labels, and how some of the big houses (Moet, Bollinger, KRUG) built the global industry. $85, Dec. 29.
- Champagne Master Class Part 2: This one is all about the Farmer Fizz, the wineries that have changed and redefined the industry over the past few years, the smaller grower-producers. Learn about and try some hard-to-find bottles. $85, Dec. 30
- Sparkling Wine Master Class: Get out of France and into the global market for sparkling wines. You'll sip from all over the world, get maps, handouts, articles, and more. $60, Dec 22.
If you think you know it all already, Henry & Son, the cool new boutique wine shop over by IMS, has a Sparkling Wine Class in which they will chat about different methods of production, from the traditional to the experimental (Soda Stream carbonation?!), and taste bubbles made from grapes like Erbaluce di Caluso, Salamino, Grolleau Gris, Gamay, Cinsault, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, Macabeo, Xarel.lo, and Parellada. $30, Dec. 15.
Surdyks' has Sparkling Thursday Tastings, tonight (!) and on Dec. 10, head over to the shop from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. and sample dozens of bubbles.
Bubbles and Birds is a spectacular event over at Revival this Sunday. It's an all-you-can-eat fried chicken and all-you-can-drink bubbles situation. Nick Rancone is opening some large format bottles of Billecart-Salmon, as well as some other surprises. $150, Dec 6.
Bubbles Beyond Champagne will be explored by wine sister Dani Megears at Heyday. Snack on platters and passed apps while you sip and see what ELSE France has to offer in the way of fizzy lifting drinks. $60, Dec. 8.
The Best of Bubbles and Bites is an annual tradition for fans of Leslee Miller of Amusee and Cooks of Crocus Hill. She kicks the class off by sabering a bottle, and then you all settle in for global bubbles paired with holiday bites such as crab cakes and artichoke dip. $60, Dec 23.
Plan ahead this year, think about getting a spot at GYST where, starting at 9 p.m. on News Year's Eve, the world of bubbles will open up to you. Worldly rare and delicious bubbles will be sampled on the half hour and there will be special snack boards for the occasion. $50, Dec. 31.
And if you want to explore some local bubbles, check out the new sparkling wines from Chankaska Creek Ranch & Winery. You might want to pop out on Dec. 12 for their Holiday Market where you can sample from lots of local vendors, and get a few sips in for yourself.
