Eat & Tell: Is There a Good Pumpkin Beer in Town?
Q: Is there a good pumpkin beer in town?
A: While I don’t think that every beverage should be infused with squashy goodness ala the latte, I am one of the beer drinkers who likes a pumpkin ale (there are plenty of beer geeks who think that sacrilege). Locally you might try Flat Earth’s Mummy Train which smells like pumpkin pie and has all the right cinnamon-nutmeg notes that make it a light but sweet chug. If you’re looking for something a little more subtle on the pumpkin, with an almost more squash than pie quality, I like Brooklyn Brewery’s Post Road which isn’t locally made, but locally available. But if you’re looking for the great pumpkin pie-latte-beer smash up, check out SouthernTier’s Pumking Ale, this one leaves no doubt. Town Hall Brewery just this week released their popular Petunia’s Pumpkin Ale, but it’s made in small batches so belly up to the bar soon if you want a slice. If you do miss it, they set some kegs aside for growler fills on the week of Thanksgiving, so look for it again on Monday Nov 19.
