Gold Medal Park is an architectural gem with paths that mimic the flow of the Mississippi. Walk to the top of the centerpiece 32-foot mound, marvel, then roll out your blanket and enjoy provisions from these nearby faves:
- Be’wiched Deli has one of my favorite sandwiches—the tuna confit with preserved lemon, black olive, and cucumber. The white bean and cous-cous salads are also top-notch.
- Surdyk’s has an incredible cheese selection and deli sandwiches that are a great bargain—everything’s around $7—like the Franklin (bacon and fig grilled cheese).
- For the scofflaw in you, grab vino at 1010 Washington Wine & Spirits, a small shop that boasts one of MSP’s best wine buyers, Rob Bonelli. He’ll find you that perfect vinho verde or grüner.
- For dessert, hit one of the nation’s best ice cream shops, Izzy’s Ice Cream, on the southwest corner of the park. Mmm, passion fruit sorbet.
