Celebrities, athletes, and world leaders, including former Prime Minister of Great Britain Tony Blair, gathered at Starkey Hearing Foundation’s 16th annual So the World May Hear gala. St. Paul has become very familiar territory for many of the celebrity attendees. This year’s red carpet parade of celebrities didn’t disappoint with some Hollywood A-listers, and, well, let’s just say a few that had the press area nudging and whispering just who was wearing the tux escorting the gown. The standouts included Jay Leno, who was gracious, relaxed, and happy to chat with the reporters—clearly Minnesota Nice has rubbed off on him the many times he’s visited here. The former King of Late Night fondly reflected on his time spent with Prince and his great sense of humor—a side of Prince many did not see.
Red carpet regulars, and all-around great guys, actors Chris and Kyle Massey know how to party and see a city. They spent their brief stay exploring the shops of Grand Avenue and Mall of America, and, with very sheepish fraternity boy grins, admitted they closed down the popular North Loop nightclub The Tangiers. Dascha Polanco of Orange Is the New Black might be the runner-up for the no-rest-for-the-weary category. She hit vintage stores in St. Paul, walked to Selby Avenue breakfast spot The French Hen Cafe for pancakes, and indulged in yuca fries at Hola Arepa. Alice Cooper and Johnny Depp don’t have to speak, their coolly confident red carpet glance and swagger say it all—you know, like the grin you get from the class president who is also the football team’s quarterback. However, for these two, it feels humbly justified.
The Twin Cities food scene is always a hit with the out-of-towners, and these celebs were no exception. The award-winning cheeseburger at St. Paul’s Saint Dinette was an all-around favorite.
Starkey Hearing Foundation raised a record-breaking $9.5 million dollars, which will provide the gift of hearing to people in need in the United States, and around the world.
See you on the scene!
