It’s hard not to love the Gophers. Everything about each maroon and gold team screams quintessential colleges sports. Students rally around the players, while Goldy leads cheers and chants that encourage each squad toward victory. Ask any Gopher athlete, and they’ll likely say the best thing about playing for the U of M is the fans. The steadfast support that Minnesotans shower over student athletes is infinite. And this Monday evening was no exception.
Big-time supporters came together at Calhoun Beach Club for the fifth annual Golden Gopher Fund’s Annual Wine Dinner. This yearly event brings together coaches, alumni, and donors to raise funds for student-athlete scholarships. This year, we were thrilled to get to share in the fundraising fun.
Upon arrival, we immediately approached Don Lucia, the head coach of the men’s hockey team, and asked for a quick pic. We were tempted to thank him for introducing us to a whole new world of hockey-loving madness, but we refrained. We chatted briefly with Lou Nanne, and then we caught up with Paul and Michelle Koch. We saw Jon Anderson, the baseball head coach, and Pam Borton, the head coach of the women’s basketball team, and we spent a good chunk of the evening discussing recent football stats with John and Nancy Lindahl.
