Who: Nature lovers, conscientious foodies, and fans of insects.
What: Mpls.St.Paul Magazine's Tastemakers: "The Buzz on Life as We Know It"
Where: The Ritz Theater
When: March 18, 2014
Why: To get the word out on how essential pollinators are to our everyday lives, and how we can help them.
The Scene: A forecast of snow didn't stop a sold out house from packing into the Ritz for a chance at conversation with like-minded bee appreciators. Professor of pollinator protection Dr. Marla Spivak drew out bee lovers of every age (plenty came ready to take notes!) while Prairie Restoration's Ron Bowen gave new meaning to landscaping, and Lucia Watson of Lucia's Restaurant helped bridge the gap between bees and brunch, all with help from moderators and Mpls.St.Paul Magazine editors Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl and Stephanie March.
The Menu: Sliders from Common Roots made their way around, while jams and honey whet the palate for the stars of the evening Tasked with creating custom cocktails using honey and Fairlife milk, Nathan McLemore-Raczkowski of Borough and Parlour came up with a milk punch of bourbon, Fairlife, and honey syrup, while Joshua Augustin of Zzest Market & Cafe steeped custom chai tea with clarified milk. Lucky for you, we got the recipes.
Kudos . . . To the energy, passion, and earnest interest our community displayed on this issue. No small feat.
Marching orders? Plant something, anything. (Pots count!) Diversify your backyard; cut back on grass. Shop the co-op. Avoid neonics. Save the bees!
