Who: Foodies and wine connoisseurs--plus those who wanted an up-close look at Tom Colicchio and Andrew Zimmern
What: Taste! Mpls.St.Paul Magazine' s Ultimate Wine & Dine
When: Friday, October 3
Where: W Minneapolis-The Foshay
Why: Frankly, Mpls.St.Paul Magazine thought the Twin Cities needed another (and dare we say, better) food and wine event in town--and we figured we were just the ones to do it. And, hey, while we're at it, let's ask for $125 a head for the preview night to help make some money for the American Red Cross.
I still have not gotten enough of the W. Sure, I work for the magazine that produced the two-day event, but I'd be drawn anyway. World-class wines. Chic setting. Great people watching? Sign me up. The beauty of a wine tasting is that, really, you: A) don't need to know anything about wine, and B) you don't need to know anyone in the room, the event does all of the work, and lucky you are along for the ride.
Though plenty of those who gathered knew each other and conversations were flowing throughout the adjoining rooms that make up the hotel's second floor event space, the primary focus was were the hundreds of wines for guests to sip and the W delectables on which to nibble. I started my night with the bubbly and a taste of both Dom Perignon and one of my favorites, Veuve Cliquot. From there I stuck with pinot grigios, fume blancs, and sauvignon blancs. Though I love a good wine tasting, like many of you, after awhile I just want a glass of wine. So I slipped downstairs with a couple of my work buddies, and we settled into the sexy W lobby bar for martinis, cocktails, and full glasses of wine. It was a Friday night, after all, and for those of us in the editorial biz, it was the Friday after production, and we just wanted to sit down.
Once refueled, we went back upstairs for the free stuff. More great wine and elbow rubbing. Here are a few of the faces that filled the beautiful space, including the big draw of the night: celebrity chef Tom Colicchio of Bravo's Top Chef . Oh, and of course, our very own, and always adorable, Andrew Zimmern, who had returned home to the TC after a multiple-week taping of episodes of his hit show Bizarre Foods , found on the Travel Channel.
