Who: Men in black tie, fashion models and designers, and a few fabulous drag queens.
What: Oscar Night® Minnesota 2009
Where: The Chambers Hotel
When: Sunday, February 23, 2009
Why: A benefit for Minnesota AIDS Project and DIVAMN, which focus on HIV awareness, prevention, and services.
Why should only the stars get to enjoy the glitz and glamour of Oscar Night®? Well it is their night, and to celebrate Hollywood and raise HIV awareness, a red-carpet crowd stepped out to watch the Oscars® on the big screen, tasting Jean-Georges Vongerichten hors d'oeuvres, and sipping $5 Cosmos in one of our town’s most LA-esque hotels, The Chambers.
The party was billed as red carpet attire, so there were many tuxed-out penguins in the room, a delight to see. Between commercials, a little pageantry ensued when student fashion designers from Minneapolis Community & Technical College showcased their clothes.
A real live Oscar®, with flawless, glimmering muscle tone rubbed in gold, was walking around inciting squawks of appreciation from all the birds in the room, penguins included. I’m sure he’ll be glowing for the next few days just like this year’s Oscar winners.
I attended the affair with my actress friend, who dramatically teared up when Heath Ledger won for best supporting actor, “Oh my God, I am going to cry.” Everyone was rooting for Slumdog Millionaire for best movie. Frankly, I was a little out of it. Since I took up jogging and sports, I simply have no time to watch movies, and thus had not seen ANY of the films nominated for a 2009 Academy Award. On the upside, my exercise routine afforded me to fit in a cream lace vintage dress that received compliments from several penguins.
Oscar Night was my cue to get out and see some great flicks again, as long as I get a work out first, I suppose I can set aside a couple of hours for entertainment.
Pass the popcorn please!
