Who: Party goers who love flowers, food, and festivities
What: Gala in the Gardens: Summer in Bloom
Where: Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
When: June 15, 2011 Why: To raise funds for the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
I had never been to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, but my mother—a gardener and floral enthusiast—encouraged me to go for years. Gala in the Gardens gave me the perfect opportunity, and I wasn’t disappointed.
The stormy weather was on everyone’s minds when they arrived at the Arboretum. Although the clouds had parted, the cocktail reception was held indoors as a precaution. The space still had plenty of flowers thanks to eye-catching arrangements with purple, pink, and yellow blooms.
Event goers in floral dresses and summer suits sipped wine, nibbled on appetizers, and enjoyed live music. I bumped into to Arboretum director Ed Schneider and his wife, Sandy, before introducing myself to event chairs Julie Hagen Showers and Susan Campbell. Guests also shopped for mystery boxes, which contained a variety of surprise items, such as a Louis Vuitton handbag and a Tiffany & Co. necklace from the Galleria.
The weather was perfect as guests walked past the Arboretum’s fragrant gardens and elegant fountains before arriving at a white tent for dinner. The tables were decorated with green and purple cloths, topped with tall floral arrangements from Indulge & Bloom. While party goers dined, KARE 11’s Belinda Jensen emceed the program, which featured music and a live auction.
The event raised funds for new signs and markers, which will be placed along the Arboretum’s 12.5 miles of paved paths and trails. I only got to see a portion of the site’s gardens, woodlands, wetlands, and prairies, but I enjoyed my short stroll. Thanks to the Arboretum’s planned improvements, I’m sure my next visit will be even better.
