Who: A sold-out crowd of Halloween revelers in search of a downtown alternative
What: Loki’s Halloween Bash
Where: The American Swedish Institute
When: Oct. 31, 2013
Why: The ASI’s Cocktails at the Castle event series is ever more imaginative at every occurrence. With food and specialty drinks by FIKA, how could we pass it up?
The Scene: Sprawled over the ASI’s 35-room Turnblad Mansion and modern addition were dozens of experiences: bonfires outside, Swedish Horror Shorts and a DJ booth in the basement, palm readings on the second floor, divination and ghost stories on the third, a Valhalla-style dining hall and stage that hosted Crimes and Strange Names. There was a surprise to be discovered ‘round every corner.
Kudos . . . to the bartenders, who treated us to birch bark-infused Bulleit rye cocktails and buttered popcorn-flavored rum & coke shots.
Dress Code: In lieu of flashing skin, revelers tended toward exuberant, well-layered getups of the Game of Thrones variety and, perhaps in a nod to the milieu, Norsemen.
Memorable Moments: Roving contortionists, a violinist, and horned man on stilts—entertainers you couldn’t be positive were over-enthusiastic partiers or hired artistes.
