Is it just us, or does it seems like the Twin Cities holiday season officially kicks off with the Cities 97 sampler release? On November 16, Cities 97 released its 22nd sampler, and we got a glimpse of the tracks at a rocking party at Bayview on Lake Minnetonka.
These CDs are one hot ticket: sold exclusively at Target, creating lines around the block, with some years selling out in minutes. This year was no different: The CDs sold out in two hours when it was released on Thursday, November 18.
It got steamy as fans and friends of Cities 97 packed the room to see performances by local band Cedar Avenue, as well as national acts Donovan Franekreiter, The Rescues, and headliner One eskimO.
Of course the Cities 97 DJs were on hand to welcome the group and announce the bands. I spotted BT chatting with One Heartland’s Susan Leckey. Later, Brian Oake took the stage wearing a faux mustache. Why not?
Bands played upstairs, food and socializing was found downstairs. Couples cozied up on couches and groups gathered around tables as a TV played the band performances that were happening on the floor above.
The good news is that all of this music is put together for a good cause. All proceeds from the CD benefit local charities. In 22 years the Sampler has raised close to $9 million for local causes. Now that sounds like a cause for dancing.
