Who: The who’s who of the Twin Cities home design industry
What: ASID Showcase Hometour Gala
Where: A progressive party starting at Dan Buettner’s comfy Lake of the Isles home and ending at a glam Edgewater spec condo overlooking Lake Calhoun
When: Friday, May 14, 2010
Why: To kick off the tour—the ASID Showcase Hometour!
When we arrived at 2691 E. Lake of the Isles Parkway for the ASID Showcase Hometour Gala, it was packed! We literally rubbed elbows with legends and luminaries of the local home design industry as we made our way up author and explorer Dan Buettner’s stairs to check out his refashioned home on tour.
The gala, by the way, christens Mpls.St.Paul Magazine’s annual home tour—a toast to the homeowners, designers, architects, general contractors, sponsors, and beneficiaries involved.
We said our hellos and went straight to—oh no, not the bar—but the top floor and worked our way down, room by room, chatting with the designers and ooh-aahing at Miro paintings, Bakers chairs, Peruvian rugs, Ukranian stenciling, and Designer’s Guild fabrics.
The rooms are inspired by Buettner’s longevity philosophy of “The Blue Zones”—places on earth where people live longer—from putting family first to relieving stress.
We caught the vibe by now and were yearning for Yerba Mate vs. the Tang-orange martinis floating around. As we went outside for some air, we noticed the longevity of this party was winding down—but it was far from over. We hopped on the trolley headed for Edgewater, the tres chic condo across the street from Lake Calhoun, also on tour this year, for round two.
It was a refreshing change of scenery, and we saw new faces as we elbowed our way through the crowd to take in the glamorous 2,320 square foot, two-bedroom and two bath spec condo, all done up in a monochrome scheme of grays and creams.
Down the hall were TWO MORE parties in unfinished units of nothing more than concrete floors and raw walls. We danced, checked out the lake view, found the after-party, and finally wrapped up the night with a snack at 112 Eatery.
After this progressive party night of design inspiration, we eagerly hit the hay, so the next day we could visit IKEA to pick up some cheap knock offs and spend the rest of the day in DIY reality.
