A Brief History of the Irish in Minnesota

Before St. Patrick’s Day became a sham(rock) of a marketing scheme (McDonald’s Shamrock Shake, anyone?), it stood as a real day of civic pride. A people who fled the potato famine literally built the city of St. Paul. The first St. Paddy’s Day parade unfurled there in 1851, and eventually the celebration made it all the way across the river.
