Gabriel by Walking Shadow Theatre
Amy Rummenie, co-artistic director of Walking Shadow Theatre, is eager to be directing English playwright Moira Buffini’s Gabriel. “It’s been in my back pocket for years,” she says. “It’s a beautiful play with strong female characters, rooted in a family of strong women.”
Set on the British island of Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands occupied by the Nazis in WWII, the women are strong, but they are trapped there with nowhere to go. When a young girl calls on ancient fairy magic, a beautiful naked young man with amnesia washes up on the beach—an object of mystery and potential danger.
“It’s a romantic drama with a hint of magical realism—a play about questions more than anything else,” Rummenie says. One of the most interesting elements of the play, she says, is the Nazi commander who is depicted “as an underdog, hoping for romance.” Sept. 26-Oct. 11.
