Some brides dream of wearing a stunning pair of Christian Louboutins or Jimmy Choos on their wedding day. Ellen had her heart set on cowboy boots. “Cowboy boots were almost as important to me as my dress,” laughs Ellen. “It was so fun to have an excuse to blow a lot of money on a pair of cowboy boots that I’ll have forever and wear all the Time.”

The groom was also clad in cowboy boots, as were all his groomsmen. The footwear fit the wedding venue, an early-1900s barn on a farm in Rochester. “We were looking for an untraditional place, and we really liked barns because they seemed to fit our vibe,” says Ellen.

That vibe translated into a classy, casual country wedding for these high school sweethearts, who’d dated for 10 years (seven of them long-distance) before getting married. A sweet ceremony in the barn’s loft was followed by an outdoor cocktail hour complete with lawn games. The couple, both country-music fans, got creative with their soundtrack, including ceremony songs by Buck Owens, Bob Dylan, and Ray LaMontagne.

“Our DJ was a one-man show,” says Darrick. “He played guitar for our ceremony, was part of our jazz trio for the cocktail hour, and then he was our DJ. It was awesome.”

Dinner was held in the ground floor of the barn, beneath strings of soft white lights and curving stone arches. In keeping with the farm feel, guests ate casual summer fare at long harvest-style tables, which were decked out with floral centerpieces in rustic boxes Ellen’s dad had made from reclaimed barnwood.

Toward the end of the evening, the barn venue afforded guests another special surprise: a spontaneous light show. “Behind the Mayowood barn are these giant cornfields,” says Ellen. “And the whole field was completely full of lightning bugs. It was one of the highlights of the night.”
