When Chris sat down next to Ben at a Hawaiian luau in October 2010, she had no idea she was about to meet the male version of herself. She did, however, notice his Nordic ski hat. “Skiers are few and far between, so immediately I was like, oh my gosh, he’s cute and he’s wearing a Nordic ski hat?” The two began talking about their love of skiing and soon discovered a slew of commonalities: Both are outdoorsy teachers who used to work at summer camps and spent a year teaching English in South America. “Everything that I tried to tell her that was really interesting, she had already done,” says Ben. “I didn’t really let her out of my sight since then.”

Little more than a year later, Ben proposed to Chris during a walk along the Mississippi River. As they started to plan their midsummer wedding, one thing was clear: “There was no question in mind we were going to get married outside,” says Chris. “Since I was a kid there’d been no doubt.”

The couple toured local farms, wineries, and orchards before settling on Columbia Manor in the Minneapolis parks system. Armed with a new Pinterest obsession, the bride enlisted family and friends in DIY projects—creating bouquets and centerpieces with zinnias from the Minneapolis Farmers Market, crafting hanging floral jars to line the ceremony aisle, and baking cookies for the cocktail hour. “We didn’t want it to be a cookie-cutter, run-of-the-mill wedding,” says Ben.

Naturally, the couple’s love for the outdoors wove through the entire wedding, from the leaf motif on the invitations, to the sweet outdoor ceremony, to the miniature potted plants that served as escort cards and take-home favors. For Chris and Ben, there was also a particularly fitting encore: a 10-day honeymoon in the Boundary Waters and Grand Marais.
