Kiehl's prez gives picks on must-have products

Just when we need hand salve the most, Kiehl’s has opened its first freestanding Twin Cities store at Mall of America—complete with photo booth, shave bar, and vintage motorcycle. We caught up with the head of the beloved 160-year-old apothecary brand.

Why the MOA? I love to do a little shopping and jump on a rollercoaster. It’s a shopping mecca like none other. It’s always been on our radar.

What products do you take on trips? I never go anywhere without Kiehl’s Lip Balm. Mine has a silver cap designed by Chrome Hearts. I always use Midnight Recovery. And Ultimate Strength Hand Salve is good for frigid temperatures.

I’m guessing you lost most guys at lip balm. Actually, that’s one of the unique things about Kiehl’s: 30 percent of purchases are by men, and that’s growing rapidly. Men are becoming more interested in skin care. Mall of America is our first store to get a shave bar where men can learn tricks and techniques. They have so many questions.

What’s next for Kiehl’s? Big, big news: We’re working on our first dark spot treatment: Clearly Corrective (available Feb. 1). It contains vitamin C molecules so small, they penetrate the skin almost like a laser. It works in eight weeks. No kidding, I had a spot on my cheek as dark as a UPS truck and it’s almost gone.
