The All-American designer hits Minnesota with two new stores
Leave it to Michael Kors to make not one but two entrances into the Twin Cities market. Minnesota’s first Michael Kors store opened in September at Mall of America (first floor, near Bloomingdale’s). Clearly, MK is taken with the southwest metro, because this month a second location will debut at Southdale Center—a coup for the Edina mall, which has struggled to land high-profile tenants in the shadows of MOA.
The Kors empire spans several product categories, including women’s ready-to-wear, shoes, fragrance, eyewear, and watches. But bags are the showpiece at the stores, and you can’t help but draw comparisons to Coach. Similar in price points and timeless American style, MK stores have more of a downtown vibe with sleek white and silver surroundings (and some intense sales associates—but perhaps we can chalk that up to opening jitters). The stores offer handbags from the Michael Kors luxury collection, but most of the merchandise, including apparel, is from the department store–friendly divisions of Kors Inc. A tad disappointing, but then, Michael knows us. And realistically, it just means there’s more to actually buy. Mall of America, 952-814-1900, michaelkors.com
