Bradley Greenwald revives his tour de force one-man show

It’s been five years since Bradley Greenwald’s initial triumph in Doug Wright’s I Am My Own Wife at the Jungle Theater. This month, he and director Joel Sass return to the one-man show with 30-plus characters, most notably Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, an actual German man who survived the Nazis and the Communists dressed as a woman.

Rather than looking at it as a spectacular performance, Greenwald and Sass decided to approach it as a piece of storytelling generated by the playwright, who is a character. “Charlotte becomes the dominant figure, but it’s about [the playwright’s] struggle to tell her story, his adoration of her, then his confusion when it was revealed that she was a Stasi collaborator,” Greenwald says. There will be no confusion about who the star of this show is, though; Greenwald is simply brilliant. Nov. 4–Dec. 18. Jungle Theater, 2951 Lyndale Ave. S., Mpls., 612-822-7063, jungletheater.com
