Todd About Town: May Edition

This year’s annual Minneapolis Oscar Party, held at Muse, had extra buzz as our very own rags-to-riches (and back to rags?) story Barkhad Abdi was up for best supporting actor in Captain Phillips. Abdi himself was in Hollywood with Tom Hanks, of course, but the Minneapolis cabbie/actor’s family had a VIP table reserved at the event—right next to Mayor Betsy Hodges. But at the 5 pm arrival time the carriage was nowhere to be seen. Abdi’s entourage finally arrived at 7:15, just as dessert plates were being cleared. Whoops!
BoneYard Kitchen and Bar, the latest resto from Kaskaid Hospitality Group (of Crave fame), opened in the long-shuttered Old Chicago building in Uptown with a party that seemed to attract the crowd I used to see bouncing from Figlio to the Uptown Bar. TV personality Laura Schara floated through the room encased in a bubble of beauty, reVamp Salon owner Christopher Hopkins snapped pictures, and Kam and Keyvan Talebi greeted guests with the kind of hospitality you’d expect from a place that serves chicken and waffles.
The sixth annual Dates of Desperation, um, make that Date for Life, raised more than $55,000 for Children’s Cancer Research Fund. It was held at the Graves 601 with a packed room of 500 potential bidders interested in an evening with one of the 30 bachelors and bachelorettes. Svelte BUZ’N 102.9 personality and new mom Shayne Wells worked the room helping to raise money for her bachelor buddy Nick Slack. Many of the evening’s bachelorettes looked as if they may have fallen victim to one of the heavy-handed Macy’s makeup artists prior to heading to the event. Note to organizers: With St. Paul being named North America’s most romantic city, perhaps it’s time to cross the river for Date for Life 2015.
Till then, see you on the scene!
