You can pretty much assume that if you’re invited to a summer soiree this year, it wil have a Great Gatsby theme. (Ladies, we suggest keeping a flapper headband in your bag at all times.) This F. Scott Fitzgerald frenzy is swell for St. Paul, but what’s really swell for St. Paul is when a landmark is given new life. The fate of the 1916 St. Paul Athletic Club, built in prime F. Scott flapper headband time, was dicey for a while there. After closing and weathering a bankruptcy, it’s been restored to its former glory and is accepting members. The gorgeous pool with its swan mosaic now holds triple-filtered water instead of chlorine, and owners hope to hark back to an era when clubs were about more than fitness—when laps were followed by cocktails in a swank bar downstairs.
