Northrop Auditorium celebrates its grand return this month by doing something no other venue in the city is equipped to do: host a large-scale ballet with more than 70 dancers. American Ballet Theatre, which performs on only a handful of U.S. stages, returns to the Twin Cities April 4 with its stunning Giselle. The makeover that closed Northrop for three years means a more intimate experience for theatergoers. Performers now have a warm-up space offstage plus a crossover behind the stage that makes entrances easier (no more running downstairs through the basement). “We wanted something really beautiful and celebratory for the reopening,” says Northrop director Christine Tschida. “There’s nothing better than gorgeous ballet for that.” 84 SE Church St., Mpls., 612-625-6600, northrop.umn.edu
