Day 23: Go Where the Buffalo Roam

Tighten your laces and head west for a taste of the Minnesota prairie at Blue Mounds State Park.

Blue Mounds State Park
The Great Plains seem to stretch forever at the underappreciated Blue Mounds State Park, located in the far southwestern corner of the state. Think untouched prairies, roaming bison, and dramatic quartzite rock formations. Thirteen miles of hiking trails serve up sights straight from a Willa Cather novel: wildflowers, tall-grass prairie, and the occasional prickly pear cactus bloom. For the more adventurous types, the dramatic cliffs become venues for the DNR’s new “I Can Climb” classes for beginners. dnr.state.mn.us
