Deephaven Patio

Turn your patio into an outdoor living room

Room: Patio
Where: Deephaven
Designer: Brooke Voss, Brooke Voss Design

Before laying the foundation on their dream home in Deephaven, Adam and Erin Newton spent nearly four years getting to know the land. It’s only fitting: Adam is a landscape architect and felt strongly that his house should suit the existing topography. He imagined the yard as a continuum from living area to nature.

With help from interior designer Brooke Voss, the Newtons have created a patio off their kitchen that is truly an outdoor room: a place where Adam and Erin can enjoy a cup of coffee and the newspaper in the morning and watch their boys, Fin, 5, and August, 4, play. It’s a place to eat dinner as a family and then roast marshmallows under the stars.

“The space is really dedicated to food,” Erin says. In fact, it’s all around them. Adam, who owns The Corduroy Studio, believes landscaping should be functional, so he planted a vegetable garden, strawberry bushes, apple trees, and herbs along the bluestone floor of the patio. August says “salad” is his favorite thing that Dad grows.

With an emphasis on “farm to table” dining, the cast concrete table is a focal point—and a nod to Adam’s penchant for old world style. The table’s unexpected pairing with curvy white contemporary chairs brings it more up to date for Erin, who prefers modern design.

There is also a casual seating area with a sofa and chair that look too cozy to be weather-resistant (not to men-tion child-resistant). But Erin doesn’t even flinch when Fin jumps on the chair with muddy sandals, or when he cuddles up in it with the family dog, Lily.

This space is designed to be lived in.
